This quote by W. Somerset Maugham talks to the naivety of youth and the propensity to take generosity for granted. When we are young, we often do not recognize the value of kindness and kindness, and instead assume that it is something we are entitled to. We don't recognize that generosity is a gift, which it must be valued and reciprocated. We do not understand that compassion is something that needs to be valued and not considered approved. As we age, we discover to recognize the value of kindness and to be grateful for it. We find out to appreciate the people who reveal us compassion and to be kind in return. We find out that kindness is something that should be treasured and not considered given.
