Biography

Bob Hope was an American comedian and actor.

Hope grew up as the fifth of seven brothers. His father was a stonemason and his mother an opera singer before. In 1907 the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and five years old, Bob Hope American citizen. His acting talent was discovered in earnest when he won a competition in the best imitation of Charlie Chaplin.

Hope film debuted in 1934 with the short film Going Spanish for Educational Pictures. He signed as a contract with Paramount Pictures. Hope played in the company's The Big Broadcast of 1938. Then followed a long series of comedies, many of them with Bing Crosby in The Road series. He also appeared on numerous radio programs and television shows, and wrote several books. He was eventually awarded the status as something of an institution in American entertainment. He was doing some charity work, and performed often and feel free to American soldiers in war zones. Hope was especially famous for his characteristic short jokes, structured as three or four lines of text at all.

Bob Hope received five Academy Award and has received four stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for film, radio, television and theater. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom 20 January 1969 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. In 1998 he was appointed Honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
