Her mother was a music teacher and her father was pastor. In addition, both university teachers. She read music at university alongside this she read also international politics. She was on 22 January 2001 was appointed to President George W. Bush's national security adviser. After Colin Powell announced his resignation as Foreign Minister on 12 November 2004, nominated by U.S. President Rice for the position, and served from November 26th January 2005 to 20th January 2009.

She is the first African-American woman, second African-American (after Colin Powell) and the second woman (after Madeleine Albright) who has this post.
