Daisaku Ikeda is president of Soka Gakkai International (SGI) which is a non-governmental organization with more than 12 million. members in 192 countries. He is also the founder of many institutions such as the Boston Research Center for the 21st Century, the Toda Institute for World Peace and Policy Research, Min-On Music Association, Fuji Art Museum and the Soka education system with universities in Tokyo, Japan and Orange County, USA.Ikeda was born in Tokyo 1928 and was an eyewitness to the human loss, torment and confusion as a nation at war creates. In postwar Japan chaotic confessed himself to Buddhism after a meeting with the educator and the burning pacifist Josei Toda. Toda was the leader of the Buddhist Soka Gakkai lęgorganisation and had been imprisoned during World War II because of his faith. These experiences sharpened Ikedas deep commitment to peace work and is the reason for his efforts to create a global culture of peace. He has spread his ideas through lectures at many of the world's leading universities, and has met in dialogue with big personalities. Arnold Toynbee, Johan Galtung, Vaclav Havel, Henry Kissinger, Chou Enlai, Mikhail Gorbachev and Nelson Mandela. In 1983, Daisaku Ikeda received the UN Peace Medal. He helped to ease tensions between China and the Soviet Union in the 1970s through the "private party diplomacy" and in 1997 he became an honorary member of the World Federation of United Nations Associations - WFUNA for his great commitment to the UN. As the only world Ikeda has received over 250 academic doctorates and honorary titles. Number 250, he received on 21 March 2009 from University City College, South from Haderslev.
