Faith & Spirit Quote by Paracelsus

"But is not He who created it for the sake of the sick body more than the remedy? And is not He who cures the soul, which is more than the body, greater?"

About this Quote

Paracelsus is doing something sneakily radical: he uses the language of medicine to smuggle in a hierarchy of authority. The questions aren’t really questions. They’re a rhetorical trap meant to make doubt feel illogical, even ungrateful. If you accept the “remedy” as a good, you’re nudged to accept an even larger claim about its source and purpose. The move is classic early modern thought: natural knowledge doesn’t compete with God; it escalates into God.

The subtext is a rebuke to narrow empiricism before it even fully exists. Paracelsus, the insurgent physician who mocked bookish Galenism and embraced alchemy, is often remembered as a proto-scientist with a taste for the occult. Here he’s also a metaphysician defending the idea that healing is not merely technical but moral and cosmic. Bodies are “sick,” but souls are diagnosable too, and the greater physician is the one who treats the deeper disease.

Context matters: Europe is convulsed by the Reformation, and the legitimacy of intermediaries (priests, universities, old authorities) is up for grabs. Paracelsus positions the healer as someone who reads both nature and spirit, collapsing the boundary between clinic and chapel. The intent is to elevate medicine from craft to vocation: if cures are real, their maker must be more real; if the soul is the higher patient, then medicine becomes a ladder to theology. It works because it flatters the listener’s gratitude while quietly rerouting it upward.
