The Northern celebration, which was mainly made up of abolitionists, was promoting the abolition of slavery and the limitation of slavery in the areas. This position was opposed by the Southern party, which was mainly made up of slaveholders. The political stress between the two parties ultimately caused the Compromise of 1850, which attempted to solve the concern of slavery in the areas. However, the Compromise of 1850 only served to more irritate the political tensions in between the 2 celebrations, leading to the political excitement of 1854.
