Wit & Attitude Quote by Pablo Picasso

"We all know that art is not truth. Art is lie that makes us realise truth"

About this Quote

Picasso doesn’t apologize for art’s dishonesty; he weaponizes it. “Art is not truth” lands like a slap at anyone who wants painting (or any aesthetic object) to behave like a court transcript. Coming from an artist who helped detonate traditional realism, it’s also a manifesto: if you treat representation as a neutral window, you’re already lost. The point isn’t that art fails at truth-telling. It’s that literal accuracy is a shallow substitute for insight.

The second line flips the accusation into a method. Art is a “lie” in the sense that it’s constructed: chosen angles, cropped frames, distorted proportions, heightened color, staged scenes. Those manipulations aren’t bugs; they’re the toolset. By bending the visible world, art reveals the invisible one: fear, desire, status, violence, boredom, ecstasy. Picasso’s own Cubist fracture is a perfect example: the “lie” of multiple perspectives at once produces a sharper truth about how perception actually works - partial, mobile, never singular.

The subtext is almost combative. He’s warning viewers against confusing sincerity with realism, and creators against confusing craft with mere depiction. In the early 20th century, with photography taking over documentation and Europe chewing on modernity’s brutality, the old promise of art-as-mirror looked naive. Picasso argues for art-as-exposure: a made thing that tells on us. The lie is the mask; the truth is what slips out underneath.
