Hugh Jackman, Michael is an Australian film and stage actor, best known for his role as Wolverine in the movie X-Men, and its two sequels, and his Tony Award-winning performance in The Boy from Oz. His other work in American films include Swordfish, Van Helsing and Kate & Leopold (Jackman latter was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in Musical or Comedy in 2001).
His film work includes Erskineville Kings and Paperback Hero (both from 1999), while his television work includes Law of the Land, Halifax fp, Blue Heels and The Man From Snowy River.
On stage, Jackman played "Gaston" in the Melbourne production of Beauty and the Beast, and "Joe Gillis" in the same city's version of Sunset Boulevard.
He first became known outside of Australia when he starred as "Curly" in the Royal National Theatres production of Oklahoma! in London. His performance was filmed and was broadcast on TV and released on DVD. On 6 June 2002 Jackman sang the role of "Billy Bigelow" in Carousel in a special concert performance at Carnegie Hall in Manhattan, New York.
He was signed to the movie X-Men at the last minute, after Dougray Scott, who originally was to have the role as "Wolverine" was delayed on the set of Mission: Impossible II. The role of "Wolverine" Jackman was made overnight celebrity, and he repeated the role in X-Men 2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) and (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) (2009).
