Benny grew up in Chicago and Waukegan, Illinois. He began a career as a violinist, which, however, was interrupted by World War One. However, he discovered his comedy talent while serving in the Navy during the war.
After the war, he made film debut in 1929 but had its greatest success through radio and television, often with Eddie "Rochester" Anderson.
He became known as self-deprecating, violin-playing miser, but contrary to his roles as a vain, self-righteous and angry man, he was in real life one of the most generous and humble ever in show business.
In the film, he came to make several highly acclaimed performances, the number one in the To be or not be (1942). Other films include the Broadway Melody (1935) and Susan slept with me (1954).
