Her moms and dads, Rosemary "Posie" Alyce and Homer Edward "Ed" Anderson III, relocated the household to the United Kingdom when Gillian was just two years of ages. In London, they resided in Crouch End and later on in Harringay till Gillian was 11 years old. The family then returned to the United States, settling in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

In high school, Anderson discovered her passion for acting and became greatly associated with theater productions.
